Why did I tile my own South Dakota farmland?

"I was a farm kid...I knew first hand what too much water and too little water did to the crops.  Then after graduating from the University of Sioux Falls, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, I worked at Prinsco, a local South Dakota company that manufactures drain tile.  I saw first hand how installing drain tile improved crops when there was too much water and too little water.  When I went back to the farm full-time, I knew I needed to install drain tile on my own cropland. I didn't install the drain tile for one year improvement or even five year improvement, I installed it for my kids and grandkids to also reap the rewards in 30 to 50 years!"

High Crop Productivity

Because of the soil type in South Dakota, farmland would remain wet for several days after a rain without adequate drainage, preventing timely field work, and causing stress on growing crops (and the farmer!).  Saturated soils do not provide sufficient aeration for crop root development, and can be an important source of plant stress.  That's why agricultural water management systems of poorly draining soils has become integral to maintaining a profitable crop production system.  There has been a 69% increase in acres tiled just in the state of South Dakota in the past few years.
